How Wide Is a Forklift
Why Width Matters More Than Length
A forklift's length (with forks) changes depending on mast tilt and fork position. But the width is fixed. If the truck doesn't fit through a door or between rack uprights, it doesn't fit — regardless of length.
Three places width matters most:
1. Door openings
Standard warehouse man-door: 800–900 mm wide — too narrow for even the smallest forklift. Standard roll-up dock door: 2,400–3,000 mm wide — fits most counterbalance trucks up to 5 tons.
2. Rack upright spacing
If you're storing fork-first between rack uprights, the gap between uprights must be wider than the forklift. For a 2-ton counterbalance at 1,200 mm wide, the upright gap needs to be 1,300–1,500 mm minimum (allowing 50–150 mm clearance per side).
3. Aisle width (right-angle stack)
Aisle width is not the same as truck width. A 1,200 mm wide truck needs a 3,500–4,000 mm wide aisle to turn 90° and deposit a pallet. The truck width is one input. The turning radius, load length, and mast pivot point determine the actual aisle requirement.
The Two Width Numbers You Need
When someone says 'how wide is a forklift,' they usually mean overall chassis width. But there are actually two numbers:

On a standard counterbalance, the chassis width is the only width you need. On a reach truck or turret truck, the outrigger-to-outrigger width is larger than the chassis.

The 3-wheel stand-up forklift is typically the narrowest counterbalance option. At 950–1,100 mm wide, it opens doors and aisles that a 4-wheel truck can't navigate.
Clearance Requirements (Don't Just Fit — Allow Space)
The truck width is not the aisle width. You need clearance:

Example: A 1,200 mm wide electric forklift needs:
- Door opening: minimum 1,400 mm (1,200 + 200 mm)
- Rack upright gap: minimum 1,350 mm (1,200 + 150 mm)
- Single aisle: 2,400–3,000 mm (truck + load + turning space)
- Two-way aisle: 3,000–4,000 mm
How to Measure Your Forklift
If you need the exact width of a specific truck:
Step 1: Measure across the widest point of the chassis — typically the outer edges of the drive tires or the steer axle.
Step 2: If the truck has dual tires (some diesel models), measure from outside of one dual set to the other.
Step 3: Add any attachments that protrude beyond the chassis width.
Step 4: Check the data plate — some manufacturers list overall width in the dimensional spec section.
Note: Fork width is not part of overall width. Forks extend forward, not sideways (unless you have a side-shifter, which adds 100–150 mm to the effective width when shifted to one side).

Note the turret truck: Despite being 1,244 mm wide (similar to a counterbalance), it turns in a 1,650 mm aisle because it doesn't need to pivot — the forks rotate instead of the truck. Truck width alone doesn't tell you aisle requirements.
The Bottom Line
A forklift is 520 mm (smallest pallet jack) to 2,800 mm (largest rough terrain). For most standard warehouses, a 2-ton counterbalance forklift is 1,100–1,250 mm wide.
But truck width is only one number in the equation. You also need:
- Right-angle stacking aisle width
- Door opening with clearance
- Rack upright spacing
- Two-way traffic allowance
