2. The Mast — The Re-masting Scam
Some used forklifts have had the mast replaced. If the replacement mast is taller or shorter than the original spec, the capacity rating on the data plate is no longer valid.
How it happens: A dealer buys a forklift with a broken 3-stage mast, replaces it with a cheaper 2-stage mast from another model, and sells the truck as 'ready to work.' The data plate still says the original capacity. The truck physically cannot carry it.
Check: Ask for the original mast part number and compare to the data plate. If they don't match, walk away — or demand a re-rating certificate from the manufacturer.
3. The Missing Data Plate — Instant Deal Breaker
Every forklift has a data plate welded to the chassis. If it's missing, painted over, or illegible, the truck's certified capacity does not exist.
Legally, you cannot verify:
