Description
What 72-Inch Forks Are Actually For
| Application | Why 72 Inches Instead of Standard |
|---|---|
| Double pallet handling | Pick two 40″ pallets at once — eliminates an extra trip per cycle |
| Lumber and timber | 6 ft forks support long loads without the front-heavy tipping that 48″ forks cause |
| Pipe and tube stock | Full-length support prevents rolling and shifting during transport |
| Large crates and machinery | Oversized loads need fork length beyond the load center to stay stable |
| Furniture and bulky goods | Sofas, mattresses, large appliances — 72″ spreads the support |
| Truck unloading | Reach deeper into trailers to grab pallets that aren’t staged at the edge |

Construction: What Makes a Fork Safe vs. What Makes It Dangerous
Forklift forks look simple — two pieces of shaped steel. But the difference between a fork that lasts 10 years and a fork that cracks at the heel after 6 months is in the manufacturing process.
Drop forged, not flame cut. Drop forging compresses the grain structure of the steel, following the shape of the fork. The grain flows around the heel curve rather than being cut across it. Flame-cut forks (cheaper, faster) cut across the grain at the heel — the exact point where forks experience the most stress. A flame-cut heel is a crack waiting to happen.
| Construction Method | Grain Structure at Heel | Typical Life | Safety Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drop forged | Grain flows around curve | 8-12 years with proper use | Full 3:1 safety factor |
| Flame cut from plate | Grain is cut across | 2-4 years | Reduced — no grain continuity |
Full-length heat treatment, not surface-only. Induction hardening should run the full length of the fork blade, not just the first 6 inches from the heel. Surface-only hardening leaves the tip of the fork soft and prone to bending under heavy point loads.
4142 alloy steel, not 1045 mild steel. 1045 is common in budget forks. It lacks the chromium content that gives 4142 its through-hardening depth and fatigue resistance. 4142 costs more per billet. It also lasts 2-3x longer in daily use.
72 Inch vs Standard Fork Lengths: When to Size Up
| Fork Length | Best For | Not Recommended For |
|---|---|---|
| 42 inch | Single standard pallet (40″ entry) | Double pallets, long loads |
| 48 inch | Single pallet + overhang clearance | Double pallets, 8 ft lumber |
| 60 inch | Double pallets, medium-length loads | Reach truck applications (limited by aisle space) |
| 72 inch | Double pallets, lumber, pipe, oversized crates | Tight aisles, narrow storage, reach trucks |
| 96 inch | 8 ft / 2.4 m long loads, specialized | General warehouse use (too long for maneuvering) |
If your forklift operates in tight aisles (under 12 ft), 72-inch forks may be too long for maneuvering. Measure your turning radius with fork length included. The fork extends past the front of the mast; in tight turns, a 72-inch fork sweeps a wider arc than a 48-inch fork.
Compatibility Check
72-inch forks mount on standard ITA hook carriages. Before ordering, verify:
- Carriage class — Measure the mounting height of your carriage. Class 2 fits forks with 16-20 inch mounting height. Class 3 fits 20-25 inch.
- Carriage width — Standard 72-inch forks ship on 42-inch (Class 2) or 45-inch (Class 3) carriage spacing. Verify your forklift’s carriage width.
- Existing fork thickness — If replacing existing forks, measure your current fork’s shank thickness (1.5″ or 1.75″). Match it to the carriage lock opening.
- Lift capacity de-rating — 72-inch forks shift the load center forward compared to 42-inch forks. Check your forklift’s capacity chart at the extended load center. A forklift rated for 5,000 lb at 24-inch load center will have reduced capacity with 72-inch forks at a longer load center.
| Load Center with 72″ Forks | Approximate Capacity Reduction |
|---|---|
| 24 inch (load centered on forks) | No reduction |
| 30 inch (load shifted forward) | ~15-20% reduction |
| 36 inch (long load, deep fork entry) | ~25-30% reduction |
