The Simple Answer
A forklift rating like '2,000 kg at 500 mm load center' means:
- The forklift can lift 2,000 kg only if the load's center of gravity is within 500 mm of the fork face
- If the load is longer, wider, or oddly shaped so the center of gravity falls at 600 mm — the same forklift can now lift significantly less
The physics: A forklift is a lever. The load in front is trying to tip the truck forward. The counterweight in back is holding it down. The further forward the load's center of gravity moves, the more leverage it has against the counterweight. More leverage = less capacity.

How to Find the Load Center of Your Load
Step 1: Measure the length of the pallet or load in the direction of the forks.
Step 2: Divide by 2.
That's the load center.
Example:
- Standard pallet: 1,200 mm long ÷ 2 = 600 mm load center
- Short pallet: 1,000 mm long ÷ 2 = 500 mm load center
- 48' standard pallet (≈1,220 mm): 610 mm load center
Problem: Most standard forklifts are rated at 500 mm load center. Most standard pallets are 1,200 mm long — that's a 600 mm load center. If you buy a '2 ton forklift rated at 500 mm load center' and move standard pallets, your actual capacity is about 1.7 tons, not 2 tons.
This is the most common mistake in forklift buying.

If you operate in North America or Europe with standard 48' × 40' pallets, a 600 mm load center forklift is the right choice. The rated capacity is the real capacity for your load.
If you buy a 500 mm load center truck for 1,200 mm pallets, you lose 15% of your rated capacity immediately.
Real-World Example
You buy a 2.5-ton forklift rated at 500 mm load center for your warehouse. Your pallets are standard 1,200 mm (load center = 600 mm).
What you think you bought: 2,500 kg capacity. What you actually have: ~2,125 kg capacity (85% of rated).
You load a pallet weighing 2,300 kg. The forklift lifts it off the ground, but the rear wheels feel light. On a slight incline or a turn, the rear end lifts and you lose steering control. The operator can't stop the load from shifting. This is how tip-overs happen.
The spec sheet wasn't wrong. But the spec sheet assumed a load length that doesn't match your actual operation.
Load Center and Fork Length
The load center also determines what fork length you need. The forks should extend at least two-thirds of the pallet length.
